Happy Birthday to Me

I started my birthday early! Applebee’s on Saturday. Found my favorite chips and bought a new mower!

My daughter planned a birthday dinner tonight for me.  She invited some friends to meet us at our local Colton’s Restaurant.  She made sure that they knew it was my birthday, so that I would receive some kind of birthday treat.  After I was presented with a huge chocolate sundae, the serving staff announced my birthday and that it was my 21st birthday.  I’ve never been shy about my age, but thought that I’ve reached “that” age where I must be looking more mature.  I have no problem admitting my age.  Today, I turned 41 years old and yes, I realized how mature I have become when I realized that my new lawn equipment was as exciting to me today as a new car would have been to me at 21.

was a birthday that  I’ll never forget.  Yes, I turned 30 that day, but age is just a number and my age honestly didn’t bother me in the slightest.  Looking back, I wish now that my age had actually been a depressing factor.  I can remember almost every minute of every hour.  There are some days that it might be wonderful to have a recall memory of days like that, but not that day.  Like many Americans, I found a renewed sense of patriotism and a great respect for all survivors of that fateful day.  Living in a military community, I have an even greater respect for the sacrifices that our service members have made on my behalf and continue to make on a daily basis.

My daughter and some of her friends were upset that our local high school had no sort of celebration in honor of 9/11 today.  Most of them were in kindergarten or younger on that fateful day.  They were too young to understand what was happening and I’m sure very few have any memory of the events of that actual day.  The memories they have are likely from all of the television replays and movies over the years.  I for one was a bit relieved to wake up on my birthday, the first time in the past decade, and not have a knot in my stomach or a sense of dread as I began watching the morning news.  The horrible acts of terrorism that day drove home the slogan, “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.”  So many of us even closer together today because of terrorists who tried to tear our country apart.  Perhaps with less and less of the public focus on 9/11 Commemorative Services, our country will continue along the much needed path of healing.
