The light easily projects both of these distances, but we played around with the angle of the flashlight and the settings (described below) to get it to project that far. By twisting the head of the light you can adjust the beam shape from a wide flood light to a tight spot light, even while riding. The wide light is awesome when it is really dark and you need to see all around you. The spotlight is most effective when you are going faster and need to see far into the distance.
