Good Cook Avocado SlicerGood Cook Avocado Slicer

Avocado is the one green vegetable that I can eat all day, every day.  Oops, did I call avocado a vegetable?  It’s really a fruit, just in case you didn’t know it.  Most people are only familiar with avocado when used to make guacamole and served at a Mexican restaurant.  But this month, the Good Cook Kitchen Experts were challenged to create and share recipes using avocados that excluded guacamole.  To help us with our challenge, we were sent a tool that I didn’t know existed, an Avocado Slicer.  While it’s pretty easy to chop or mash an avocado, it’s not so easy to slice an avocado and have it come out looking neat.  I can usually slice an avocado pretty neatly, but it takes me some time to do it.  I did it for my Cobb Salad on a Bun and people asked me how I did it.  No way will I go back to doing it with a knife and taking the pain-staking time that it took for those perfect slices now that I have a great tool that will do it for me in about fifteen seconds.

Remove an Avocado PitRemove an Avocado Pit

Special thanks to my friend, Tristan H., who showed me how to remove the avocado pit.  I’ve tried to do this for years, but I’m a hands on learner!  Don’t think you’ve got to go Kung Fu crazy with the force when you pop the knife into the pit, but you do need a knife that’s relatively sharp and enough force to break into the pit.

Good Cook Citrus ZesterGood Cook Citrus Zester

I’ll be honest, I’ve had a Citrus Zester in my kitchen for years, probably a decade or more.  Have I ever used it?  Nope!  Not even once.  But, I did try this one when it was sent to me.  It gave me two options to zest my fruit.  One option gave me a cutter that I’m sure would be great for recipes like candied orange peel and other similar recipes that I’ve read before.  The tip of the Citrus Zester allows you to shave off the tiny little strings that are called for in many recipes.  With my new found experience, I might not be so afraid of the “zest” recipes from now on.

Good Cook Citrus ReamerGood Cook Citrus Reamer

If you cook from scratch or just like juicing your own citrus fruit, you will want a Citrus Reamer.  Until I received this one from Good Cook, I had never actually used one.  I had used a manual cone juicer and had just squeezed lemons and limes for the juice and they do not compare whatsoever to using a reamer.  Many years ago, I learned to microwave citrus fruit to help get the maximum juice possible.  I did microwave my lime for about 20 seconds, after I used the Citrus Zester on the skin.  As you can tell from the picture, there was no pulp or juice left to waste using this method.  Another trick to help loosen up the insides of your citrus fruit is the roughly roll it across your table or counter top after microwaving it.
