Valentine’s Day Cinnamon Rolls

This week the Dishing It Up crew has some great Valentine’s treats to share with you. I haven’t been married for quite a few years and my daughter isn’t old enough to date yet, so we do something special together each Valentine’s Day. I found these Valentine’s Day Cinnamon Rolls over on Pinterest and recreated them with my own special touches. The original recipe calls for making them out of fresh dough, but I cheated by using refrigerated cinnamon rolls instead.

My daughter was really excited to see the Valentine’s Day Cinnamon Rolls that I made red just for her. She’s allergic to red dye #40 and it’s the most commonly used red dye found in red, orange, purple, pink, and even white foods, drinks, and candies. We have found that Wilton carries a line of food dyes that we keep on hand that allows me to decorate treats for her that won’t make her sick.

When I got married, I didn’t register for any fine or everyday china. That’s just not the sort of person I am. Over the years however, I have accumulated several different sets of dishes: Tupperware, Strawberry Stoneware (matches my kitchen), Tulips (from the grocery store), White with Gold Trim (Kmart), and my Christmas dishes (Montgomery Valentine Day Cinnamon RollsWard). I did receive several tablecloths and matching placemats as wedding gifts and over the years have also acquired a few more to match the dishes. After a holiday is the very best time to buy this sort of thing, because it’s often marked down to 25% of the original price or less. So with having all of these “pretties” on hand, it’s really easy to go a step further to make a special treat feel even more special for that special someone.

Even though we were only putting everything together for the sake of pictures for this post, my daughter (15) was just as giddy as she always is with decorating for a holiday. Look at what a difference it made when I took the Valentine’s Day Cinnamon Rolls off the baking stone and placed them on the clear serving tray. Wouldn’t the love (or loves) of your life be excited to find a table set like this awaiting them on Valentine’s Day morning?

Turn a simple can of refrigerated cinnamon rolls into an unbelievable Valentine's Day Cinnamon Rolls they'll never forget!
Ingredients
  • Refrigerated Cinnamon Rolls (These were Kroger brand)
  • Red or Pink Food Dye (Optional)
  • Pizza Stone (optional)
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to the temperature given on the roll of cinnamon rolls. Open the can of cinnamon rolls. Set the glaze aside. Unroll the cinnamon rolls.
  2. Separate one strip from the others.
  3. Begin rolling each end of the cinnamon roll toward the center.
  4. It may be easier to roll sideways instead of standing up.
  5. Once the two ends meet, transfer it to your desired place on the baking sheet. I use a pizza stone. You may need to unroll it a little to form and shape the pointed bottom of the heart.
  6. Just before putting in the oven, pinch the tip of the heart to help it keep the pointy tip.
  7. I shaped mine into a circle of hearts while placing them on the baking sheet.
  8. (OPTIONAL) While the cinnamon rolls are baking, I put about half of the icing into a small bowl and dipped just the tip of the baby spoon into the jar of dye. Blend thoroughly. I don't know if I used too much or if it's just "that" red dye thing, but it ended up with the bitter red flavor. I probably won't do this again. 🙁
  9. Bake according to the directions on the can. Mine baked at 400* for about 15 minutes.Allow the cinnamon rolls to cool for about five minutes before icing. This will allow the icing to remain on top of the cinnamon rolls instead of completely melting down and ending up on the stone (or baking sheet). The cinnamon rolls normally take about 15 minutes to bake. These were ready to eat in about 25 minutes.
  10. (DYED ICING OPTIONAL) Use the white icing on every other cinnamon roll heart. Use the spoon to apply the dyed icing to the remaining cinnamon rolls.
  11. The finished project!
