Does summer time mean sandwich time around your house?  With more travel and evening activities dinnertime plans are often pushed aside and then rushed in order to feed the kids before putting them to bed.  There’s no need to hit a drive thru on the way to or from activities in order to feed the family.  Instead of rushing and stressing over these night time meals, plan ahead to avoid the pitfalls that lead to meal time meltdowns.

No, planning doesn’t have to take much time or effort.  Take the time to cook extra meat if you prefer sandwiches made with things like meatloaf, grilled chicken, and roast beef.  When putting away your leftovers, take the few extra minutes to prep them for your sandwiches then.  Bag them, put them in freezer containers, pack them in individual containers, or family size containers.  You know, whatever floats the sandwich boat at your house.

The kids like Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches?  Make a whole loaf of them, place them in individual plastic bags, and then back into the bread bag to freeze them all at once!  Another way to save time is to pack them into larger plastic bags or storage containers so that you can just grab and go.  The frozen sandwich won’t need to be kept refrigerated as long and most kids love the frozen name brand sandwiches that come in a box, so save money and make your own.

Eating on the go?  Either buy the large bags of chips, snack crackers, cookies, etc. and bag them for the individual family members or buy the large bags with smaller packs inside.  Use the same ideas as the sandwiches and pack several small bags into one larger bag for each member of the family, including juice packs, napkins, and other necessary items.  Do this once a week and have your picnic at the game or eat on your way there or on your way home without the need to rush around after work.  If you shop in bulk, only once a month, etc. pack all of your “to go bags” after returning from shopping or the next day and you’re done for the rest of the month.
