Harlem Globetrotters – Fun for the Entire Family

Thanks to being a member of the USFG Blogger Network, my daughter and I received tickets to attend our first Harlem Globetrotters game.  My cousins went to a Harlem Globetrotters game when we were kids and I’ve wanted to see them play in the thirty plus years in between.

Our tickets gave us the choice of sitting in the upper level of the arena or at the corner of the court on the front row.  I wanted to sit in the upper level at half court, but my daughter chose the corner seats.  I’m glad we went with her choice.  Our seats ROCKED!

The Harlem Globetrotters played against The Allstars.  Guests stars on the Allstars team included two local news anchors from KSPR33 in Springfield.  The Allstars entered the arena from the hallway beside our seats.  It was also the working corner for the Globetrotters crew, so we had a little visual notice when something exciting was about to happen.  Needless to say, there was LOTS of excitement in our area during the two hour game.

In case you’re not familiar with the Harlem Globetrotters, it’s about so much more than a basketball game.  It’s even hard to call it a game, it’s more of a family show.  It really reminded me of the old variety shows I grew up watching in the 70s, lots of silly, slapstick humor enjoyable by the youngest to the oldest.

From the pregame to the end of the show, it was evident that the Globetrotters do what they do for their love of children.  There are two mascots, Globie and Big G, who keep the kids entertained and the crowd energized.  Multiple times throughout the show, children were brought onto the floor to participate in games, competitions, or just to help entertain the crowd.

We loved when Harlem Globetrotter Flip came to our side of the arena and began talking to this little boy.  The next thing we knew, Flip carried the little boy off to the other side of the arena, and was sitting with the other Globetrotters.  This young man was part of the closing of the show.  The Globetrotters assisted him in a slam dunk of his basketball before the Globetrotters won the game, just as they have for every game they have played over the last 88 years.  After helping win the game, another Globetrotter held his hand and walked him back to his parents.  It was one of the sweetest things I’ve ever seen.

When the Harlem Globetrotters head to your town, take your whole family if you can.  It will be the best two hours your family will spend together for years to come!
