About ten years ago, I purchased a Kirby Vacuum System.  The cleaning abilities with the Kirby blew me away and I couldn’t refuse it.  However, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2005 and sidelined by it with retirement in 2008.  I had three MS attacks within 6 months which robbed me of the majority of my upper body strength.  Thankfully, I have only had one attack since then, but the strength has never been regained.

While I am physically able to vacuum my home, it leaves me exhausted and often in pain.  Although the Kirby does a fantastic job, it is HEAVY and difficult for me to operate at this point in life.  The head has to be swapped in order to use the hose and attachments.  Of course, that’s in hopes that the attachments were put back in the storage bin.  I hate having to rely on my 17 year old daughter to do all of the vacuuming for me and also realize that the potential for her to do this is also short-term because of her age.

So, when the opportunity to test drive the Dyson D65 Animal presented itself to me, I was anxious and hopeful to be selected as a participant in the project.  I was ecstatic when I received the message notifying me about being selected.  Then the wait began for the delivery, I thought it would never get here.

Dyson DC65 Animal Attachments

Setting up my Dyson DC65 Animal was a breeze.  A pamphlet was attached to the vacuum handle and it was literally as easy as 1-2-3.  It took longer for me to unbox it than for me to set it up.  The on-board storage system for tools and built-in extension hose  allows almost everything to be stored in one location, where they’re needed most – on the vacuum!

  • New configuration of bristles dig deeper into carpets to remove more dirt
  • Remodeled airflows to help remove more dirt, dust, and allergens from the home.
  • 180AW of suction (vs. 160AW in DC41)
  • Comes in three colors based on variant: Platinum (MF), Purple (AN) and Fuchsia (ANC)
  • Self-adjusting baseplate
  • Long-reach telescopic wand
  • 2x suction of any other vacuum
  • Closer edge pick-up
  • Built to survive 10 years
  • Hygienic bin emptying

Ceiling Fan Cleaned with Dyson AnimalCeiling Fan Cleaned with Dyson Animal

Less than fifteen minutes after unboxing my new Dyson DC65 Animal, I had attachments selected and ready for use.  Even though it was still late winter, the Spring Cleaning Bug had been released by that cute little ball of a vacuum.  Because of the MS, my family and friends yell at me for doing things like climbing on ladders to do housework.  As a result, my ceiling fan in my living room had a special layer of THICK dust on it.  The soft dusting brush was attached to the hose, my feet stayed firmly on the floor,  and less than twenty minutes later the entire fan was spotless and shining brightly.

Then began the “fun” task, my television.  My television works beautifully.  It’s a big, old, boxy beast, but has a beautiful picture.  However, an electronics friend of mine has told me that it may not last much longer.  It’s the old tube style and either a tube is burning out or there is so much dust built up on the inside that it has created it’s on electromagnetic field.  Yes, it’s a HUGE magnet for DUST!  Just nine days before we took this picture, we had removed everything from the top and sides of the tv, dusted, and sprayed it all down with window cleaner.   The picture shows what a fabulous the Dyson DC65 Animal dusting brush did with super, fine dust.  Yes, a new TV is next on the shopping list.  😉

As mentioned earlier, I have very little upper body strength due to the Multiple Sclerosis.  Reaching over head and “balancing” on the ceiling fan is easier than holding my arms up to vacuum curtains and walls.  With my old vacuum, I don’t even try this any more.  It’s not worth the pain I’m left with afterward.  Surprisingly, the balance isn’t an issue when vacuuming my curtains with the Dyson DC65 Animal.  Not only that, but I can actually use one hand to get the job done, even from several feet away!

Obviously, I enjoy cleaning with the attachments connected to the built-in vacuum hose.  My daughter is actually yelling at me for vacuuming so much these days!

The Dyson DC65 Animal automatically switches from the floor vacuum head to the vacuum hose.  No switches have to be flipped, no parts have to be changed out.  Just remove the vacuum hose from the handle and go.  The same thing applies to the vacuum and vacuum head itself.  It reacts to how you handle it to “know” what to do.  The handle releases the vacuum from an upright position without having to press any buttons or switches.  The vacuum head is self-adjusting on all four corners, based on floor and height.  There is no need to switch anything up or down, the Dyson just does it for you.  There is no time, power, or suction loss when switching from vinyl or hardwood to carpeting, resulting in better cleaning better than any other vacuum across carpets and hard floors.

Unlike many vacuums available over the last fifty years or more, the Dyson DC65 Animal doesn’t use a bag to collect dirt and debris.  Although it maintains HEPA filtration standards, you only need to empty the bin when it’s full.  The savings on bags can really make a difference in the long run.  It also includes a five year parts and labor warranty which outlasts most vacuums these days.

The Dyson DC65 Animal would make a fabulous wedding, housewarming, graduation, or even a baby shower gift.

I love that you highlighted the ease in which to use the vacuum in areas which are not just normal vacuuming areas. While the Dyson may be a wonderful vacuum, there is absolutely no possible way I would ever spend this much money on a vacuum cleaner – someone would have to convince me it could last long enough for me to justify the cost over time in owning it – $500 is just ridiculous in my opinion I have better things to spend that kind of money on.

    • LOL – I did learn a LONG time ago that you really get what you pay for when it comes to a vacuum cleaner. If this price scares you, don’t ask me about the price of the other one. 😉 The life expectancy of a Dyson is projected to be at least ten years from the documentation I found.

I’ve had my current vacuum for 11 years and still going strong – spent $139 on it. I agree you get what you pay for, just in this case for a vacuum the sucker would have to last about 20 plus years for me to spend that price on it.

        • 🙂 LOL – You spend your money on your wine and I’ll spend mine on cleaning tools. We know one another’s weaknesses. 😉

  2. Great review. I have been curious about this vacuum as the one I’m using now doesn’t have any attachments. I am on the short side so knowing the hoses are long is a great plus.

    • Thanks! The hose really is as long as it looks like in the picture. It just “pops” back into place when you’re finished, so it’s surprising that it also stretches so long. I couldn’t handle a vacuum without attachments any more, too old and set in my ways.
