New Orleans Style Muffaletta Sandwich

If you’ve ever traveled very far outside of your immediate area, you probably learned that learned that things go by different names according to where you’re at.  Growing up in Louisiana, we called all types of soda Coke.  It didn’t matter if it was made by the Pepsi Company, it was what kind of “Coke” do you want when you went to a restaurant or a store.  Just across the state line, over in Texas, everything was referred to as a Pepsi.  As I got older, I learned that what we called a po’boy was called a hoagie, sub, and submarine in other areas.  However, no matter where I go, I’ve never found a sandwich that comes close to New Orleans Style Muffaletta!

I haven’t lived in Louisiana in nearly twenty years, but I used to always make it a priority to eat a muffaletta while I was down home.  Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with a gluten intolerance about a decade ago, putting my beloved Muffaletta on the “No Go” list.  Traditionally, a muffaletta is made on a big, fat  Italian wheat bread roll about 12″ in diameter.  Depending on where you get it, it may be covered with sesame seeds.  But the word wheat does not play well with someone who has a gluten intolerance.  My digestive system isn’t able to correctly process the protein in wheat and other grains containing gluten, so for many years, I have been unable to enjoy many of my all time favorites.

My ex-husband was in the Army.  We were first stationed in Denver and then here in Mid Missouri.  In both locations, we had to have our parents bring or mail us things from the south that we couldn’t find.  One of the things that my parents used to bring to me was the olive salad referred to in this recipe.  When we last priced it at $9.99 for a pint size jar, I knew that I had to come up with a way to make my own when I needed it.  I created my own Olive Salad blend and the directions for it are in the recipe below.

I have to say that overall, I am quite impressed with the outcome of my Gluten Free Muffaletta Sandwich.  Whether or not you eat Gluten Free, this may just be a sandwich that you will enjoy.

Traditionally, a muffaletta is made on a big, fat Italian roll and smothered in olive salad. Because of a gluten intolerance, I now make my own muffalettas, including the olive salad. Yum Yum!
Ingredients
  • Olive Salad (or Green Olives, Black Olives, Red Onion, Italian Dressing)
  • Sliced Pepperoni
  • Sliced Salami (Genoa or Hard)
  • Provolone Cheese
  • Mozzarella Cheese
  • Gluten Free Bread
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 400*.
To Reduce the Fat and Calories:
  1. Spread salami and pepperoni between sheets of paper towels. Microwave for about 20 - 30 seconds. Take out and roll paper towels into a scroll shape with salami and pepperoni inside.
For the Olive Salad:
  1. Use a variety of deli, jar, or canned green and black olives. Chop olives into small pieces. Combine olives together.
  2. Cut onion into small pieces. Add to olive mix.

  4. Add just enough Italian dressing to the olive mix to blend everything well.
  5. If you like a little spice, chop and add pepperocinis to the olive salad.
For the Sandwich:
  1. Place two slices of bread on a stone, baking sheet etc.
  2. Spread olive salad completely across each slice of bread.
  3. Cover one slice of bread with salami and the other slice of bread with pepperoni.
  4. Cover one side with provolone and the other side with mozzarella
  5. Add more olive salad to one side.
  6. Bake until cheese is golden and bubbly.
  7. Stack the two sides together after removing from the oven to get all of the flavors in every bite.
